Four Practical Tips to Tune Up Your Intuitive Thinking

Call it a gut feeling, a sixth sense, or having a hunch. Whatever term you use, they all refer to the ability to understand something based on instinctive ‘gut’ feeling or intuitive thinking. That’s the ultimate expression of your authentic self, the real you.

There have been many times that I’ve listened to that small inner voice and taken a proverbial leap of faith. One of them was making the transition from university career centre director to holistic health educator.

I could have stayed in my long-term job and kept a comfortable salary with generous perks, good pension, great staff. Alternatively, I could have explored related career options. Instead, I felt compelled to pursue a new and unfamiliar path.

After doing some necessary research, I had a distinct hunch that my career move was going to be successful. It would happen at the right time and for the right reasons. And the sky wouldn’t fall in the process. And you know what? My intuitive thinking proved to be right.

Test Your Intuitive Thinking

How is your intuition? Is it working for you?

See how many of these questions you can answer ‘yes’ to (adapted from Dr. Judith Orloff’s intuition quiz). Do you:

Pay attention to body language?

Listen to your gut feelings about people?

Heed your body’s early warning signs such as fatigue?

Acknowledge ‘beware’ signs such as getting a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach?

Feel there is wisdom in dreams?

Act on what inspires you rather than only making decisions on what seems right on paper?

Live Better Intuitively

According to the Institute of HeartMath using your intuition can enhance your life in several ways:

Make better, more heart-based decisions more often

Improve physical, mental, emotional health

Increase effectiveness at work and everyday life

Maximize creativity

Reduce stress

Increase self awareness

Tune Up Your Intuition

Einstein recognized the unique power of intuition. He called the intuitive mind a sacred gift. One of my favourite quotes about living your true life and intuitive thinking comes from another visionary, Steve Jobs:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”

Ready to follow your heart and intuition? Here’s what’s worked for me:

1. Learn to meditate

Meditation calms the constant wave of thoughts running through your head. It enables more clarity to let your true self emerge. See my post about meditation for beginners to give you some basic techniques.

2. Actively relax

Focussing on your breath or a specific image forces you to pay closer attention to the present moment. The more present you are, the more you’ll notice your intuitive feelings starting to surface.

3. Be creative

Engage your brain in creative pursuits. Visualize. Brainstorm. Indulge yourself in an artistic activity: paint, dance, write. Photography is especially good to sharpen intuitive insights. Free yourself to be yourself.

4. Listen to your heart, head and gut

They’re all part of an inner guidance system that works closely together to help you make choices. If you listen carefully, you’ll sense what they’re telling you whenever you face a decision. Learn to trust your heart, head, and gut. And watch the video above to hear one man’s story in this revealing TEDTalk about intuition (viewed seven million times).

Tap, Tap. Who’s There?

Remember that your intuitive wisdom is always there, waiting to be tapped. Check in with yourself as often as you check your phone messages. When you have a decision to make, pause and ask your knowing self for an answer. Then listen.
