How do you cope with day-to-day stress and anxiety? Reiki healing can help. This Japanese complementary therapy has proven to be one of the best natural ways to reduce stress and ease muscle tension. It’s even practiced by healthcare professionals in hospitals to treat those with diseases.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a holistic healing therapy that complements traditional medicine. Reiki practitioners don’t diagnose health problems or prescribe medications.
The practice itself is simple to learn, gentle, and non-invasive. You can even practice it on yourself.
The Canadian Reiki Association certifies practitioners in Canada and Reiki Masters offer programs privately and through schools.
Reiki is increasingly used by healthcare professionals in clinics and hospitals. Among them, Dr. Mehmet Oz uses the services of a reiki practitioner for his heart surgery patients. Dr. Christiane Northrup, a leading authority in the field of women’s health and wellness, is a strong reiki advocate.
Reiki Healing and Energy
Before we get into how reiki healing works, let’s look at its roots. The word reiki derives from two Japanese words: ‘rei’ (universal) and ‘ki’ (life energy).
Reiki enables a practitioner to access and work with what is called universal life energy to heal the body, mind, and spirit.
What’s universal life energy? The term may sound a little new-agey to those not familiar with it. But consider this for a moment: energy is at the core of all matter, including the human body, according to quantum theory. We all possess a universal life energy.
As a simple example, think about the thoughts and emotions that energize or fatigue you. They directly affect your energy level.
Now, vigorously rub your hands together and hold them apart, then slowly bring them together again with your eyes closed. What do you feel? Heat, yes. And what else? Energy, too.
Root to Crown
Reiki therapy taps into the body’s subtle energy centres that are referred to as chakras.
Each of the seven main chakras is related to specific body organs and specific emotions.
When those organs or emotions are blocked by stress or another condition, reiki helps restore them to a healthier balance.
Health Benefits of Reiki Healing
Reiki healing offers a range of benefits (that will vary from one individual to another):
• Creates deep relaxation and assists the body in releasing stress and tension
• Aids better quality sleep
• Accelerates the ability of the body to heal itself especially after injuries
• Reduces some of the side effects of drugs especially after surgery or chemotherapy
• Enhances confidence in dealing with everyday life events and challenges, leading to a more positive outlook
• Helps resolve emotional issues

What is a Typical Reiki Session Like?
You can receive reiki while sitting or lying on a massage table or other comfortable surface. A typical full session lasts about an hour. It should be administered at least one hour after a meal so that you’re able to fully focus on the treatment.
The practitioner places both hands slightly above (or on) your fully-clothed body, mostly focussing on the head and torso areas. They typically spend 3-5 minutes at each location (anywhere from 12-15 areas) as they work from head to feet. Massage techniques aren't applied at any time.
What can you immediately expect during or after a reiki session? It varies according to the individual but you'll likely experience a feeling of deep relaxation and peace.
That's one of the first results I see as someone who practices reiki. You might feel physical or mental agitation when unresolved issues arise. You could also experience any of the following:
• Feeling of warmth where touched, tingling sensations, or sometimes a feeling of cold
• Slow or deepened breathing
• Waves of energy moving through your body from head to toe
• More self awareness with a feeling of greater mental balance
